Searching for emigrants

I'm trying to trace my g-grandfather and his family, who were living in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, in 1881, but who are believed to have emigrated shortly after to Australia.

They were Charles and Elizabeth (Hoskisson). They had two sons at the time, George William, age 2, and Harry H. age 1.

My grandfather (George) grew up believing himself to have been born in Australlia, which suggests the family emigrated when he was very young. It also suggests he may have been orphaned, or shipped off to the colonies with another family. (Surely his parents would have told him his birthplace.)

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to narrow the search to a reasonable time frame for his emigration? The only data I have now is his birth, the 1881 census, his marriage in Canada in 1922, and his death in Canada in 1861.
