(DS139) Thomas Butler alive c. 1800 Kentucky, USA

What were the origins of Thomas C. or G. Butler m. Susanna Barbary / Barbour by whom he had at least a daughter (Martha Ann b.c.1808)and two sons. One of his sons, John b.c.1802 was to state on one occasion that he had been born in Logan Co. KY and, on another occasion, in Fayette Co. KY.Byron Butler of Alabama writes that he believes that Thomas G. Butler was related to his gggGrandfather Gabriel Butler. Thomas and Gabriel were living near to each other in 1801-3 in Logan County, KY. Thomas G. Butler travelled to Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1806 and made a deal with Doublehead and Chisholm. After briefly returning to KY, he went to live on Doublehead's Reserve in Alabama. In 1809, Indian agent Jonathan Meigs listed Thomas G. Butler, Gabriel Butler and John Butler as "old settlers" of Doublehead Reserve. Other research indicates that these three may have been in Maury County, Tennessee in 1812.

(DS138) Daniel Butler alive 1861 Hamilton, Ontario

In the 1861 Census, Daniel stated he was b. in Canada East c.1816 and m. to Ann (maiden name unknown) who was b. c.1816 in USA. They had six children, at least one of which was listed as negro in a subsequent census. In the 1871 Census, Daniel stated he was b. in Portugal and that Ann was b. in USA of African descent. Any info ? Could this possibly be a case of fugitive slaves seeking sanctuary in Canada ? Ed.

(DS137) Patrick Butler left Ireland in 1729, d.1758 Harwich, Massachusetts

The papers of Josiah Paine, town clerk of Harwich, Massachusetts, record that Patrick Butler, mariner, swore that he was aboard the "George and Anne" which sailed from Ireland 20 May 1729 under Captain Rymer with "sponsor" Charles Clynton and his family aboard. The ship was bound for Pennsylvania but the voyage ended at Cape Cod. Where did he originally come from and who were his parents ? He m. (1) Mehitable Smith and (2) Thankful Baker. His will mentions daughters Mary and Mehitable and son James (b.1751). James m. 26 Nov 1772 Sarah Smith of Orleans by whom James b. 30 Aug 1773 and Capt Patrick b. 26 July 1786. Capt Patrick (d. 9 Nov 1869 Wareham, Massachusetts) m. 17 March 1814 in Harwich Naomi Phillips by whom Patrick b. 15 Nov 1814, Zidion b. 9 Nov 1817, Benjamin Franklin b. 18 Jan 1822, Naomi Phillips b. 19 June 1824, Jerome Nelson b. 4 Jan 1827, Quincy Adams b. 1 Sept 1829, Sally Smith 25 Dec 1831. Five generations of the line from Capt Patrick are buried in Wareham.

(DS136) Augustus M. Butler m. 5 Oct 1871 Ruth Ann Tipton in Cherokee Co. Texas

Said to have fallen from a tree, sustaining head injuries that caused him to become abusive; then to have "returned" to Georgia where he died after surgery sometime post 1875. He and Ruth Ann had two children, William Thomas (Tom), and Laura Ann.

(DS135) John Butler Ormond b.1797 in Pembrokeshire, Wales

His parents are believed to have been Richard Ormond and Dorothy Morgan. Earlier ancestors with the surname Ormond have been traced backed to 1690. It is recorded in a family journal that John Butler Ormond had uncles "John Butler" b.1766 and "Peter Butler" b.1758 and aunts "Elizabeth Butler" b.1764. and "Jane Butler" together with a cousin "Peter Butler" b.1801 in East Indies. Seeking the precise connection between these "Butler" and "Ormond" families.Ed: Could this Peter s/o John be the Peter of Milton House, Carew, Pembs s/o Capt. John EICS mentioned in Happy Families Q65 ?

He d. 1 August 1786. He m. Sarah Wright by whom at least one son, William b.c. 17 November 1757 d. 22 July 1857 in Trimble Co. Kentucky and m. Martha Farley 11 July 1782.

(DS133) James Butler of Torquay, UK alive c.1837

James m. Sarah Plank of Bideford by whom a son James b. c.1837. James junior migrated to Newfoundland, living on the islet Oderin; he m.November 1864 Frances Fowler by whom eleven daughters.

Who were his parents and where did he come from ? He is believed to have settled in Tremont, Maine aged fourteen, working in a mill.

(DS131) Sarah Susannah Butler b.June 1810 probably in Reading, Berks, UK

Who were her parents? She m.c.1830 William Grew of Bethnel Green and died 4 September 1850. She had a daughter Mary Ann Grew b. 16 January 1864 London.

(DS130) John Butler of Cocke Co. TN, USA in 1830 aged 60-70

John Butler was one of only two Butler heads of households in the Cocke Co. TN Census of 1830. Cocke Co. records were destroyed by fire in 1876. A legal document of 1831 indicates that John owned two tracts of land in Cocke Co., "..one on which Isaiah Butler now lives." A legal action originating in Virginia identified John as son or grandson of Samuel Butler and either his wife 1) Sarah Alexander or 2) Bersheba Hudson. There is no documentary evidence of a blood relationship between John and Isaiah (1806-1877), but the descendants of Isaiah (who retain the property mentioned above) have been searching for John's ancestors for many years.

Son of ? James, he owned land at "Croneyhorn" and d.c.1876 in Ireland. William's first wife (name unknown) reportedly d. in childbirth 1821. Their two sons Thomas b. 1819 and John b.1821 emigrated to New Orleans USA in 1846, whence travelling to St Louis and finally settling near Lenox, Iowa. William m. secondly Anne by whom James, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret, Anne and William jr all b. at "Croneyhorn", Carnew, Co.Wicklow, Ireland. Any info?

(DS127) Edward A. (? "Alphred" or Anthony) Butler b.c.1900 in "New England", probably c.1935 resident of Vineland NJ, d. Philadelphia PA.

Who were his parents? He was "a man of mystery", a skilled carpenter, maybe a timberman and maybe an owner of property in New England, said to be the eldest of a large family whose mother spoke French. Edward A. m. 1934 Anna, said to have been a fostered farm maid from Sicily, by whom a son Edward A. b.c. 1935 Vineland NJ, d. Philadelphia 1969. A descendant thinks Edward A. may have had another family; if so he would like to make contact.

Who were his parents? He m. 16 February 1824, in Sumner Co. TN, Frances Hopkins Webb (dau of Daniel and Mary Gilliam Webb) by whom Daniel, Mary D., Henry Y., William H., Martha J., Tabitha, Susan, Edmund Gardiner and Joseph.

Who were his parents? He ? m. Nancy Maples pre 1830 as they are listed in Servier Co. TN census in 1830. They moved with Maples and Atchley families to AL and eventually settled in Crawford Co. AR. They had 13 girls and 2 boys.

He and his mother left Va when he was ten. He became a medical doctor, practicing in Columbus and Alton, Ohio. One of the founders of the Protestant Hospital, later White Cross Hospital and the Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Married several times: Harriet Prouty early in his life and, after other marriages, Eva Brewster, by whom Guy W. Butler and Icy Butler. Who were George's parents?

What were the names of their eleven daughters and who did they marry? The enquirer says it is impossible to trace their married names, but some approximate dates might help! Ed.

(DS121) Elinor Garland née Butler b.c. 1775 in Ireland, emigrant to Canada

With her husband John Garland of Coolcullen Co. Kilkenny Ireland and two of his brothers, she sailed to Canada in 1819. A letter from a Canon Godfrey Greene in Coolcullen, dated 1914, says that Elinor was Roman Catholic, which may have significance as the Garlands were Anglicans. John Garland's father is thought to have been William, land agent for Lord Farnham.Ed: Could there be an association with DS10 for which a reader has suggested a possible link to Moris (Maurice) Butler and Ann née O'Brian (Brien / Bryan) of Coan Co. Kilkenny, also in the parish of Dysart, who had land in Lanigan's Quarter in 1825. Their eldest son James took over the land and his descendants have remained in the district to the present, farming at nearby Coolcullen. In March 1849 widow Ann Butler née O'Brian with three sons Edmond b.c.1810, Thomas b.c.1820, Richard b.c.1822 and youngest daughter Margaret b.c.1828 arrived in Sydney, Australia. An object in their possession suggested a connection to the Mountgarret branch. Subsequently, Margaret m. Martin Gleeson who originated from Gowran, Co. Kilkenny. Their great-great-grandson is the "reader" concerned.

She m.1802 Henry Richards of Co. Wexford. Ireland. What is her ancestry? A large number of her Richards grandchildren emigrated to New Zealand where five of them intermarried with the Butler Harrison family of DS 117 below.

(DS117) Thomas Harrison baptised 1851 St John's Hollyfort, Co. Wexford, Ireland, migrated to USA mid 1870's

Thomas Harrison was the eldest of 14 children of Ruth Butler (b. Feb 1830 Co. Wexford, daughter of George Butler and Anne "Nancy" Colbourne, and descended from James Butler d.1717 of Clonachona, Broomville, Co. Carlow) and her husband Thomas Eagar Harrison (b. 25 March 1824 of Annagh, Hollyfort, near Gorey, Co. Wexford, Ireland). After a spot of bother, Thomas is said to have been given a one-way ticket to the States, where he may have stayed initially with his grandparents, Andrew and Mary Harrison (née Eagar), or their descendants. Andrew Harrison had earlier emigrated from Wexford to New York where he had a grocery business. Twelve of Thomas' siblings emigrated to New Zealand in a chain migration from 1875 onwards; a descendant in NZ wants to make contact with the american branch of the Harrison family.

(DS116) Charlotte McGurr née Harrison baptised 1867 St John's Hollyfort

DS117 above refers. Charlotte was the 11th of the 14 children of Ruth Butler and Thomas Eagar Harrison and the only one to remain in Ireland. She is rumoured to have married, to the disapproval of her parents, one Michael McGurr, a shepherd in Co. Down and a Catholic. Descendants sought.

(DS115) Margaret Butler (1568-1652)

Married Lawrence Washington (1568-1616). A descendant wants to know more about Margaret. Another descendant (in USA) writes that Margaret was the eldest da of William of Tighes in Sussex and m. Aston-le-Wells, Northampton. She d. 16 March 1651 and is buried at East Hadon. Her husband was a connection of the Spencer family. She had seventeen children. A complete account of this family can be found in "Historical Southern Families Vol.1 by John Bennet Boddie, Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Company 1968 pp 149-165.

Who were his parents and where did they come from? According to an article My Butler County Families by Timothy H. Freeman published in "Area Footprints - The genealogical society of Butler County Inc Vol.XV #3&4 August & November 1989" seen in Jefferson City Missouri State Archives:- George moved to Wayne Co. Mo from Jackson Co. Tennessee in abt 1832 having served in the entire war (1812). He was related to Bailey Butler, a captain in the Jackson Co. Tennessee militia. They were of the Butler family that established Butler's Landing in what is now Clay Co. Tennessee. George m. 1815 Nancy Kindal or Kennel by whom 12 children, including Mary Ann b.1821 in Tenn., Francis M. b.1824 in Tenn., Thomas b. 1829 in Tenn., and Eliza J. b.1833 in Wayne Co. Mo. Wife said to have been called Nancy. Father of Thomas Jefferson Butler of Wayne Co. Mo. USA.

Said to have been married firstly to a Sir William Butler and secondly to James Kelly of "Kilsheelan", Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Her son, James Edmond Kelly b.1810 is said to have come into a large inheritance from his grandfather. Who were Honoria's parents?

(DS110) Michael Butler b. c. 1830 perhaps near Clonmel or Powerstown, Tipperary, Ireland, and migrated to USA c. 1845-1855

By 1860 he was in St Louis, Missouri, where he died in 1905. From the birth order of his son's one might speculate that his father was called John, James, or Thomas.
