(DS39) John (or Jack) Butler b.c.1885 of Carrick on Shannon

Married Lizzy Connolly c.1874. Between 1875 and 1901 they had at least five children, Bridget, William, Thomas, Lizzy and Mary all of whom emigrated to Lowell, Mass., USA but Thomas returned to Ireland c.1911 and may have descendants. Seeking to contact these descendants and searching for ancestors of John.

(DS38) Samuel William Butler b. 1841 London, son of Samuel James Butler

The 1881 Census lists Samuel James Butler as a 75 year old watch case gilder living in at 3 Hewitt Street, Shoreditch, London with his (presumably second) wife Mary A. (formerly Barry) aged 49 years; unmarried son Alfred (33) also a gilder; and unmarried stepdaughter Abigal Barry (25). Samuel James Butler was born in Fulham, Middlesex. His first wife was Ann Maria Rose (two years younger than him) and they were married at St Brides, Fleet Street on 20th June 1836 when they were both described as "of this parish". The 1841 Census lists them at 22 Worship Street, St Leonard, Shoreditch, with their children, Frederick (6), Eliza (4) and Emma (2). By the 1851 Census, they were living at 15 Gloster Street, St Leonard, Shoreditch, Tower Hamlets, with their children: Frederick (15), Eliza (13), Emma (11), William (9), Lewis(7), Rosa (4) and Alfred (1).
Samuel William Butler, son of Samuel James and Ann Maria Rose was born on 8th Nov 1841 at 22 Worship St., Curtain Road, St. Leonards, Shoreditch. He (aged 24, Bachelor) married Julia Emma Baker (aged 33, Spinster, dau of Thomas Baker, porter) on 31st Jan 1871 at St. Mark, Old Street Road, Shoreditch. The 1881 Census lists Samuel William Butler as a Cabinet Maker (aged 39) living at 5 St James Place, Shoreditch, with his wife JANE (44) [is she his second wife or not?] and children William Lewis (8), Frederick (4), and Alice (9 months). He may also have had another daughter Julia Rose b. 21 Jun 1871. Samuel William Butler died 12th Sept 1927 at 51 Allens Buildings, St. Leonard, Shoreditch. A Butler in Nova Scotia is now seeking descendants of these families.

Any help gratefully received. Lord Dunboyne writes that Marcella Burnell was da of Christopher Burnell of Ranaghan, Co. Clare by Mary da of James Butler of Doon, Co. Tipperary and relict of Thady Macnamara of Ayle. (Her half brother, Henry Burnell m. Barbera da of Patrick Fitzgibbon, uncle of 1st Earl of Clare).
This James Butler (d.1727) of Doon, Co. Tipperary should not be confused with James Butler of Doonbeg, Co. Clare (b.1759) whose wife Catherine nee Hogan inherited Doonbeg Court, Co. Clare from an uncle, and whose daughter, Susan Butler (d.1829) married John McMahon Blackall of Killard (1788-1862) producing Catherine Blackall who was to marry Jonas Blackall (1812-1888) from whom Sir H.W. Blackall (1889-1982) was descended in the male line.
Sir Henry Blackwall did much valuable original research and his collection of genealogical papers are thought to have been given to the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin.

(DS32) Caleb Butler b.9 Jan 1792 Rutland Co., Vermont, USA

Father may have been named Anthony. Mother probably called Amy. Caleb married Polly Whitney 4 March 1813. Possibly connected to a scrap of information that one "Anna / Ama / Amy" who was "widow of Anthony Butler and Stephen Pitkin", later married one "Squire Deland". Enquirer seeks confirmation of Caleb's parentage and then want to discover origins of this branch. Lord Dunboyne remarks that there are few Caleb Butlers on record so it might be worthwhile to investigate the reference to a Caleb Butler who witnessed the Will of Samuel Hemenway of Groton, mentioned by L.Vernon Briggs in his "History and Genealogy of the Cabot Family" Volume 2 (1927) page 72

(DS31) Thomas Butler emigrated from "Redriffe near London" Aug 1672 to Charleston, USA

With his wife Sarah, son Shem and daughter Ann plus 5 servants. "There is a notation regarding Shem in various family records which says that he was of the House of Ormonde". Any leads ? Caution may be needed against possible confusion over "Redriffe"- there may have been two places of this name, one near London and another near Bristol. However, one researcher writes that "Redriff" or "Redriffe" was the old name for Rotherhithe, quoting as his source http://www.se16.btinternet.co.uk

(DS30) Lady Butler m. George Crowther (an Irish Judge)

Lady Butler, said to have been a daughter of James, Duke of Ormonde, is recorded on a family tree (in the possession of the Hadley family) as having married George Crowther, described as an Irish Judge. Their descendant (?daughter) Elizabeth Crowther married William Pierce (or Pearce) and produced a daughter Ann (1729-1806) said to have been of Berkeley in Gloucestershire. Ann married John Hadley on 11 Feb 1752 in Stinchcombe, Gloucestershire. Confirmation sought of these relationships between the Butler/ Crowther / Pierce families.Almost certainly not a legitimate daughter of the Duke

(DS28) Felix Gundy Butler b. 22 Feb 1837 in Arkansas

And died 15 April 1905 in Vernon, Wilbarger Co. Texas. Both these facts are according to family Bible but not corroborated elsewhere. He married Malissia Elsa Lucilla Ann DILL on 3 September 1872 in Jack Co. Texas. Any info on his forebears ? Lord Dunboyne tentatively suggests further investigation of Book One Application Number 10177 of Confederate Pension Book. One Louisa Butler of Parker Co. applied successfully for a Confederate pension.
Also, a real long shot at a possible tenuous connection with England:- Felix is an unusual name in Butler families and one of the only other recorded Felix Butlers was husband of Ann and father of Charles born 19 September 1847 in Amberley, Sussex, England according to IGI 1994

(DS27) Nicholas Butler from Kent emigrated to America in c.1637

Any leads ? A lot of research has been done on this man who emigrated to America in 1637 setting sail from Sandwich, Kent, in grand style accompanied by many servants. See Lord Dunboyne's Happy Families serial in the Butler Journal. Question 73. References include Vol 1 403-404; Vol 2 257; Vol 3 229-230 & 421 & 614..

(DS26) Thomas Butler b. c.1674 Ireland, d. c.1747 South Berwick, Maine, USA

This Thomas Butler is said to have been born in Ireland in 1674 and to have sailed to America in the ship "MacKartie" in about 1688, subsequently owning her or a ship of the same name. He settled in So.Berwick, Me, USA marrying Elizabeth Abbott in about 1697 by whom he had seven children. He died 1747 in So.Berwick, Me. Ancestors sought. A direct descendant writes from Texas that Thomas seems to have been a "man without a past". The first public record that she knows of is 6 March 1698 when he travelled with his wife Elizabeth from S.Berwick to Kittery, Maine, to record the birth of his son, Thomas. From an affidavit made many years later, we know that in 1698 he was 24 years old. She adds that the maiden name of Elizabeth is by no means certain and that the link to the "MacKartie" is news to her (what is the source?). He was apparently an educated man, considered a mathmatical scholar and speaking the "Latin tongue"; he was elected to office some 35 times. However, he seems never to have disclosed his origins and his tombstone read "Thomas Butler born 1674, Emigrant." Researchers may like to know of a book which is long out of print but sometimes can still be found for sale "Thomas Butler and His Descendants: A Genealogical History of the Butlers of Butler's Hill, South Berwick, Maine" by George Butler 1886. This states that Thomas was connected to the Ormond branch in some unknown manner.

(DS25) Joseph Butler m.1875 Sarah Holyoake in West Bromwich, England

From marriage certificate dated 20 April 1875, Joseph Butler (Works Manager & Widower aged 31 of Hazel Street, Middlesboro, son of Joseph Butler, Puddler) m. Sarah Holyoake (Spinster aged 29 of Langley, Oldbury, da. of Elisha Holyoake, Shoemaker) at the Tabernacle Chapel (Methodist) Oldbury, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Subsequently they lived at Ellesmere, Shropshire working on the railways before emigrating to Australia as paying passengers on the ship "LaHaugh" with two children Joseph (aged 3 b. Worcestershire) and Edith (aged 1 b. York). In Australia, they had five further children: Ernest, Cecil Percy, Edwin (d.young), Edward, and Harry. Further details sought on Joseph's birth, first marriage and parents including his father Joseph. Reply received from descendant of Alice Maud Butler (b.10 Jan 1881 at Unthank Street, Middlesborough) daughter of Jesse Butler (occupation Steel Puddler) b.1844 Bloomfield, Staffordshire, and Elizabeth Wright b.1848 South Stockton (Thornaby). Jesse's parents were Joseph Butler (Occupation Iron Worker) b.1816 Bloomfield and Hannah b.1819 Bloomfield. One of Alice Maud Butler's brothers went to the USA in c. 1905 and one of his daughters is believed to have married into the Parker family, possibly in New Jersey.

(DS24) Armstead (or Armistead) Butler alive USA 1823

Moved to Kentucky from Culpeper Co. VA in 1823. Any leads ? A web-surfing descendant advises that "the Armstead Butler of Culpepper Co. VA ended up in Saline Co. Illinois. He married Margaret ("Peggy") Green in VA." AND (FHL film #1872017: St Patrick's Church, 6th & Biddle, St Louis, Missouri, USA, 1853 marriage John O'Butler (s.o. Armsted O'Butler and Jane Tunst[?]) and Julia C. Bracket (d.o. James Bracket and Ortance Jarrot) witness E.A. Chouteau. Could this be the same Armsted ?
Cathleen Ganzel (grt granddaughter of Carrie Hooker (1875-1959) d/o Joseph Maclin Butler (1845-99) s/o Armstead (1815-1886), believes that there is no O'Butler connection. Her research is that Armstead Butler (29 January 1815- 21 February 1886 m. 18 September 1834 Margaret "Peggy" Green of KY, all per Butler Family Bible - Saline County,ed. Brenda Joyce Jerome 1991, The saga of S.Illinois, Vol.XViii, No.1, pp.10-11) Name spelt "Armstead" on his tombstone in Wolf Creek Cemetry, Saline Co. IL where he and Peggy moved to from Crittenden Co. KY in 1862 because of their Unionist sympathies (per descendant William Butler of Bloomington IL). Armstead was s/o Armistead Butler (1760-1837 Culpeper Co.VA and KY) per same Family Bible in Crittenden County Family and History by Brenda Joyce Jerome 1991, see also Kentucky: A History of the State Kniffen, 2nd ed., 1885 and Culpeper County Deed Records which records the sale of their land in 1827 when Armistead and Mary Butler (nee Wheatley) moved to KY. Armistead and his brother Spencer were s/o William (1735-1808) and Mary Butler of Culpepper Co. VA and Fauquier Co. VA (see Culpeper County Deed Book V, pp. 381 & 384 for deeds of gift to Armistead and siblings in 1799 and 1800). Spencer Butler has been researched extensively by descendants Jon and Tami Ballard and Peg Kavaljian. They agree that William's grandfather was Joshua Butler (1685-1725) of King George County, VA. They do not agree about which of Joshua's four sons was William's father, in particular whether he was the eldest son John (1710-1805) or the youngest son William (b. before 1725). Circumstantial evidence from tax and land records suggests that William (1735-1808) was s/o William (b. before 1725) and this is possibly supported by the absence of the name John in later generations of this line.

(DS23) James Butler b.abt 1845 St Helen's, Lancashire, England.

James m. 11 Dec.1864 Hannah Naylor at Christ Church, Eccleston. They had four children: Clara Alice (1871-1956), Alfred James (1873-1932), Bertha (1879-1944), and John (1882-1908). Alfred m.29 May 1898 Jemima Menzies Donaldson and had one child Martha Victoria (1901-1950). Bertha married three times and had two children, Emily Frances Easten (1901-1984) and Lawrence Easten (1899-1918). Relatives sought.

(DS22) Johanna Butler, probably b. Kilkenny 1850-70

She m. Joseph Sutton and had a da. Mary Agnes b. 1894, according to her own recollection in Kilkenny. Johanna was said to have grown up in or around Kilkenny Castle before moving to Manchester, England. Who were Johanna's parents? See DS197 above

(DS21) James [Clarence] Butler b. 03/06/1862

Settled in USA prior to 1900 but said to have had a strong Irish accent. Had a sister named Erie and two brothers, Tom and Obe. James m. Ula Lavern Vaughn and their son was b. in Upper Bottoms near Hickman, Fulton Co., Kentucky, in 1900. Can't find them in any of the Ky Census from 1870 to 1910 - Help sought.

(DS20) Deacon Richard Butler (d.1684 USA. b.abt 1608 Braintree, Essex, England)

Said to have sailed to America on the ship Hector in 1632 with his brother William, leaving two sister in Essex. One sister, Jane, m. a "West" and the other m. a "Winter". Richard's first wife's name is not known, but his second wife was Elizabeth Bigelow. Richard and William went to Cambridge, Mass. before following Thomas Hooker (The Braintree Group) to Hartford, Conn. where they became original proprietors and are listed on the founding monument. Several of Richard's children married into the Olmstead family. Richard's parents are believed to have been Stephen (b.abt 1580) and Mary; and Stephen's father, John (b.abt 1550), but further confirmation of these English origins is sought.

(DS19) Ida Florence Butler (b.8 March 1878, d. 13 June 1970)

She was b. in Hickman, Fulton Co., Ky, USA and d. in Texas City, Galveston Co., Texas, USA. Said to have been da. of Overton Butler and Azalie Butler who were believed to have had three other children Edgar, Ogden, and Ethel. Any help would be greatly appreciated by her grandson.

(DS18) Nancy Davis / Nancy Davi(s/d) Butler b.9 Aug 1785 Petersburg VA USA

Mother of 15 Children. Died Newton Co. GA USA 6 March 1875. Believed to have married about 1800 Thomas Almand b.16 Aug 1779 Rockingham Co. NC.
This redoubtable lady appears to have been generally called Nancy Davis but the surname Butler is also associated with her. At least three of her sons had Butler as a second name. Any info on Nancy's ancestors ?

(DS17) The origins of the Botelers of Maryland, USA

In 1634 the catholic Calvert family accomplished the first settlement of Maryland (Lord Baltimore). Two or three years later a John Boteler appeared on the scene in Chesapeake Bay, supporting his brother-in-law William Claiborne against Calvert's claim to Kent Island. John's brother Thos. (d.Maryland 1646) was ancestor of numerous American Butlers, but his parentage and the English or Irish origins of this family remain a mystery. In the literature, there are several versions which appear to be mutually incompatible. BODDIE identifies the parents of John and Thos. as being John and Jane Botiller, married at Roxwell, Essex, England in 1599, whose ancestry can be traced to 12th Century Yatton (presumably but not certainly Yatton in Somerset). However, BURKE identifies Thos. son of John and Jane as Thos. (d.1681) of Fryerning, Essex, England. Possibly related to the brothers John and Thos. is the following line of early Maryland settlers on whom further information is sought:

(DS16) William Butler (b.1810-20 Buckinghamshire, England) m. Hannah Brock

Believed to have had a number of children of whom two emigrated to Canada in 1868; Frederick born 2 Oct 1846 and Henry died 1889 in a lumber camp in USA. The indomitable TG has tracked down the marriage of William Butler (Labourer of Edgcote, Buckinghamshire) to SUSANNAH Brock (Lacemaker of Stoke Lyne) in the parish church of Stoke Lyne, Oxfordshire, 1845. On the marriage certificate William's father is named as Richard Butler (Labourer) and one of the witnesses is another William Butler. Futher info on this Richard and William, please. Prime targets for further investigation as possible members of the same family should include Richard Butler who m.1835 Jane Garrett (widow) in Banbury and Richard Butler who m.1832 Rhoda Thame in Stoke Lyne. Also William Butler who m. 8 Oct 1810 Ann James in Stoke Lyne.

(DS15) Ignatius Butler b.10 Feb 1755 (? in England / Ireland) d. 1810 Kentucky USA

Fought in the American Revolution as a "Matross" (Ammunition Bearer) in the 1st Virginian Artillery. Said to have been literate and well educated. Believed to have had three brothers, John, Robert and Clifford. Who were his parents and where was he born ?

(DS14) Samuel Liberty Butler (?aka E.A. Butler) born c.1818

Father of Lavinia Butler b.1858 d.1950. Wife's name believed to have been "Prussia". Only record so far found is the Californian Census. The GGGrandson of Samuel Liberty Butler was surfing the net and spotted this enquiry. He was able to provide the following valuable information: Samuel Liberty Butler is believed to have been born in Kentucky in 1817, married in Danville IL in 1837 to Alcinda Clyman, and by her had issue, Geneva, Lavina, Stratton, Thomas Milton, Almond, Rastus (sometimes spelt Erastus, which may explain the initials E.A.), and John Samuel. Alcinda died 1861 in MO and Samuel married again 1862 in Livingston Co. MO to Prussia Sutliff by whom he had further issue, Lenore, Emma (Julia Emma), Bell (Rosa Belle) and America (Mickey). Prussia died 1908 in Santa Rosa CA. Samuel is believed to have died in Santa Rosa CA in 1895. Thank you for this data. Considerable further details have also since been sent by other researchers, including where they are buried.

(DS13) Henry Butler alive c.1844 Belfast and c.1858 Dublin

Possibly a lawyer. Wife believed to have been Frances Maria Hall who, according to a journal she kept between 1847 and 1858, was then living in (?) Ballybunnion. Parents of Evelyn (Eva) Juanita Butler (b.1844 Belfast m. John Thompson(b.1841), possibly in Liverpool, then emigrated to Canada, d. 1920 Toronto) and Eleanor (Ellen) Butler (b.1857 Dublin m. William Harwood Millman, Toronto, 1881, d.1933 Toronto). Eva visited Dublin to visit family in 1890's and early 1900's. Known friends from those days include include Dexeter family in Dublin, L'Estrange family in Liverpool, and one Mip Savage, described as "a female". Q131 & Addenda in Journal refers. Any help gratefully received.

(DS12) Helen Mary Butler born 27 Aug 1890, Templederry, Co. Tipperary.

According to her US Naturalisation Application, but there are suspicions about the year of birth. Died: 8 Feb 1955 Dallas, USA. Married: Ernest William Barton 25 May 1911, London, UK. The Marriage License states her father was John Butler, a farmer. John Butler was married to Mary Dwyer. Stories tell that this Mary died after Helen Mary's birth and her father died shortly afterwards following a fall from a horse. Said to have been raised in a Catholic home for orphans. One known sister: Catherine Mary b.1868 married but no children died in USA. Possibly also some unknown brothers.

John Butler m. Catherine Delaney 22/2/1841, Cloughrinka, Muckalee Parish, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Where did he come from and who were his parents? Interested in contacting anyone researching the Castlecomer area of Co. Kilkenny.

(DS9) Omar Pasha Butler b. c.1857 Canada and his father Thomas Butler

New research: Omar Pasha Butler was born 8 Nov.1856 and died 24 May 1936 in Stirling, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. Omar married Jennie Wheeler and they had Vera (who m. Jack Archer), Ernest (b.1882 Stirling, Ont., d.1950/53 Toronto), Tom J. (who had 5 Children - Names Unknown), and Bessie. Omar's father Thomas was born in England 2 Nov.1821 and had children in Stirling Ont., Mary Jane (b.14 Oct.1849 d.10 Feb.1863), Lora Melissa (b.19 Apr.1852, d.2 Mar.1863), William John (b.4 May 1854, d.20 Apr.1927 m.Susan Wheeler, no issue) and Omar. Thomas died quite young on 9 Dec.1862 in Stirling Ont. without leaving a will. Thomas' father William John Butler had to make a declaration. It now transpires that William John Butler was a Baptist Minister who emigrated with his family from England to Stirling, Ont. Further information sought on William John Butler and his English origins.

Ancestors sought of John P. Butler b. Aug 1838. Probably one of the Butler families settled in Wilkes Barre, Hazleton, Freeland, Catasauqua area of Pennsylvania, USA. [There is quite a lot about Butlers in this area in The Journal - ed.]

James Alfred Butler born 7/11/1825 in Tennessee, married Nancy Ann Thornburgh (born 8/4/1827) in Tennessee. They lived much of their lives in Platte County, Missouri. James' father was Thomas Butler and his mother's maidenname is said to have been Kirkpatrick. Any information ?

(DS6) William Butler b.1818

William Butler, born 9/5/1818 "within the sound of Bow Bells"(this the traditional definition of a Cockney, [who live in the East End of London]), departed England 1845 and arrived Nova Scotia c.1849. He married a British girl, Mary Ann Stokes, born 27/12/1831 who is said to have been raised on Jamaica. Information sought on ancestors of both.

Their son Michael Butler is believed, according to family tradition, to have been born in the Tipperary area, possibly Cashel, in 1837. Michael and his siblings, John, Mary & Sarah emigrated to Australia in the 1860's. Any information.

(DS3) Jabez Butler USA 1700s

Thomas Butler of Attleborough, Massachusetts, USA, married Sarah Gould of Topsfield, Mass. on 24/11/1720. They had children: Jabez, Sarah, Jemima, Solomon, Daniel. Any further information, in particular can anyone find a possible connection to Smith Butler (see Journal Vol 2 No.4 p.464) one of whose brothers was also named Jabez.

Any record of parents and/or marriage of Edward Thomas Butler who is believed to have married Emma Maria Hewitt in Lowestoft, England in the 1860's. News has been received of some interesting documents in New Zealand.

(DS1) Butler / Hannagan marriage 1866 New Zealand

Martin Butler (b.1838) married Margaret Hannagan (b.1848) on 18 December 1866 at Hamiltons Otago New Zealand. Descendants are sought. Have received the comment that there is no such a place as Hamilton in Otago, but there are about fourteen Hannagans in the phone book for Dunedin, Otago. BUT: have since also been informed (for which many thanks) that Wises 1948 New Zealand Directory gives "HAMILTONS BAY - below Deborah Bay, Port Chalmers."
